IELTS Writing: Assessment criteria
Each of the four factors used to evaluate the essay section of the writing exam contributes one-fourth i.e. 25% of the overall IELTS writing band score. The contributing elements are as follows:
Task Achievement / Task Response: This section evaluates your knowledge of the prescribed topic, your comprehension of the key arguments presented in your response, and your accuracy in understanding the issue. Make sure your essay is at least 250 words long and that you have enough time within the given 40 minutes to proofread it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Coherence refers to the way concepts make sense. You must arrange your ideas clearly and write understandably to produce cohesive writing. Cohesion is the appropriate method of tying various literary elements together using linking words like “however”, “moreover”, “nevertheless” etc. Make sure you employ lots of linking words in your writing and avoid word redundancy.
Lexical Resource: The examiner would evaluate your work for correctness, vocabulary depth, spelling errors, and effective word choice and usage to determine this point. Making effective use of a large vocabulary might help you score higher on this criterion.
Grammatical Accuracy and Range: This section evaluates your use of correct language, sentence construction, and punctuation. To ace this part, you should employ a wide variety of grammar and use your vocabulary accurately.
